Common Misconceptions : Yoga vs Exercise
The first misconception that often arises is that Yoga postures are acrobatic and aerobic activities like those one might find in a gym. However this is not the case. To illuminate this fact, let us look at some of the processes that occur during exercise.
During physical exercise, stress is exerted on the muscles and as a result, the muscles demand increased blood supply. Due to this demand, the heart beats faster and the blood pressure rises. The higher demand for oxygen stimulates the respiratory system and the combination of all these processes leads to perspiration.
Yoga movements, on the other hand, seek to actually relax the muscles. Relaxed muscles require less blood supply and thus offer beneficial rest to the heart and lungs. Blood pressure is reduced by the practice of asanas(Yoga Postures) and the heart rate also decreases. Yoga practices should not lead to perspiration.
