Inspirational life-tales of Pujya Bapuji

A long time ago, Pujya Bapuji stayed in Himmatnagar Ashram. Pujya Shri was going to another place for Satsang discourse that morning. When the cook brought halwa (a sweet Indian dish made of flour, ghee and sugar) and milk for Bapuji’s breakfast, Bapuji said, “Let us go. I shall have the breakfast on the way in the car.”

Sometimes Bapuji takes His meals in the car due to lack of time. When we reached outside the city of Himmatnagar, we saw a dog lying on the roadside, two of his legs were disabled; therefore he was unable to walk. He was unable even to deal with the houseflies swarming around his mouth. He was weak, emaciated, hungry and thirsty and was lying in an extremely miserable and wretched condition. It may cross anyone’s mind upon seeing a dog in such plight, ‘Believe it or not the dog must be suffering from a grave sin committed in a previous birth.’ As soon as Bapuji’s glance fell upon the dog, His heart full of compassion showered on him. The great Guru instructed the driver to stop the car.

Bapuji asked His cook, ‘Where is the Halwa?’

When the cook gave Him the tiffin, He said, “Go and feed the dog the halwa.” Feeling shocked, the cook thought, “Gurudev has not taken His breakfast yet and he is wanting to give the food prepared for Him to the dog.”

Upon reading his mind, Pujya Shri, His Holiness said, “I am present in that dog too. At this time, I am much more in need of food in that body.”

What a wonderful state of nonduality a Brahmajnani has! What a Sarvatmadrishti! They see their own Self in all beings. It has been stated about such Brahmajnani great men in the Gita (5.18):

“The learned ones look with equanimity on a Brahman endowed with learning and humility, a cow, an elephant and even a dog as well as an eater of dog meat.”

Bapuji is a living example of the above mentioned words from the scriptures.

There are many people in the world who hit the dogs with a stick, there are also people in society who give them a piece of Roti (unleavened bread). However extremely rare are those Self-realized great men who are found in rare places who love the dog lying in such a wretched state as His own Self. Greatly fortunate are those in society who can recognize them, and they are most unfortunate who spread vicious propaganda against them and revile them.

Upon returning from feeding halwa to the dog, Bapuji said to the cook, “Now I am satisfied.”

The call from a disciple’s heart does reach the SatGuru

This incident dates back to 2006. Pujya Bapuji was in blissful solitude in Pethmala (Gujarat) ashram. One day when the evening Satsang discourse session was over, Gurudev went back to His cottage.

At around 10:30 pm Bapuji suddenly came out of His cottage. He went to the kitchen driving the car himself. The kitchen was some distance from the cottage; He took the meals and proceeded towards the main gate of ashram. It has been generally recognised that Bapuji does not wake up any of His attendants from sleep during the night; if someone attempts to do it, He
forbids them. Pujya Shri neither awakened the driver nor the kitchen attendant.

Later on it was found that some devotees had arrived from far off places. Because they couldn’t have ‘darshan’ of Bapuji they were waiting at the main gate with the hope of having His ‘Darshan’, when all of a sudden Bapuji arrived there; their joy knew no bounds. All were exhilarated upon having Bapuji’s darshan.

Bapuji asked them, “Have you eaten?” The devotees made a negative gesture. Bapuji served food to all of them. Their hearts were overwhelmed with emotion upon seeing His generosity and compassion.

Those devotees said to the ashram residents the following day, “We had come with the hope of having His ‘darshan’ and were sitting, but what we received is just unforgettable.”
